Tonight my willpower broke and I wandered into an Apple store to see the iPhone. Actually, I went to see what the big deal was with the new Mac OS "Leopard." (Not much to say about that--I'm not a Mac guy, so I didn't really have anything to compare the new OS to. On a gigantic screen--21 inch or better--the various programs looked fantastic, though. I was particularly interested in the movie-maker program). But when I saw the iPhone, I made a beeline to it.
I haven't gotten an iPhone because, first of all, the price. I just can't afford it. Now that I'm a married man with a little bundle of poopy joy on the way, the temptation isn't hard to avoid. But second, I really like MS Outlook. The iPhone doesn't work with it, so...
That said, day-um, it's all it's cracked up to be. It's small-but-large, the Internet is faster than I expected on such a device, I had absolutely no problem typing things on the on-screen keyboard, and movies looked fantastic. This thing has style.
But what was really disturbing out tonight was the cheering. When my wife and I walked into the Apple store, they shoved Leopard t-shirts into our hands and cheered. I know it's a big deal and all, (Apple releases a new OS what, every decade or so?) but come on. They repeated that maneuver with each new customer. I half expected a string of limos outside.
Anyway, perhaps someday, or when the next version comes out, the stars will align and I'll get an iPhone. But for now, our love just isn't meant to be.
Besides, the AT&T Tilt is calling my name...
